Workers change the worldOn October 15, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
You know, the world of work wasn’t always like this. It was worse! Weekends? Contracts? Minimum wages? There was a time where all that was nothing more than science fiction. Sick leave? A fantasy. The fight for workers’ rights has been a long series of advances, setbacks, and struggles. Nothing was given. It was the collective effort of many women and men. The eight-hour workday, parental leave, pensions… all were won with sweat, tears… and often blood. During Europe’s recent economic crisis, hundreds of billions of our money was used to save banks We faced higher unemployment and inequality. EU-backed austerity saw cuts to public services and the weakening of laws to protect workers. Precarious work such as zero-hour contracts became common, the gig economy began to rise. The achievements of the workers movement show that by fighting together we can win rights and dignity. We CAN build a better world – of fair conditions, decent wages, gender equality, and work-life balance. Workers already changed the world, we just need to do it again!
