Warming Up Exercise – A Step Forward #7On August 9, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
This team exercise is designed to be used before and after a training day. During this exercise, the team stands in a circle at an equal distance from each other. The purpose is to find out the team members’ expectations for the day. Someone in the circle says what he or she expects from the day for example, getting to know each other better. This person then takes one step forward. Anyone who shares that expectation also takes one step forward. This way the group can see clearly how strong an expectation is. Everyone stands still for a few seconds and then steps back into the circle. The next person says his expectation for the day. For example: improve communication. This person takes a step forward. The people who share this expectation also take a step forward so again, the team can see how strong the expectation is. Everyone gets a chance to share their expectation. This way it becomes clear what the team expects from the day. The trainer can adjust the day to fit these expectations and the group will do this subconsciously. The day begins. And at the end of the day, everyone stands in a circle again. This time they state what they think was achieved during the day. For example: disagreements were expressed. Again, this person takes a step forward. This way the group can have a sense of what the team feels was achieved during the day. Of course, as before, everyone gets a turn to share. The trainer can also ask other questions like: What went well during the day? or what didn’t? The trainer leads the exercise and gives feedback when necessary.
