The Beehive Game “Live” Walkthrough ~ The World’s Greatest Speed Networking ActivityOn August 17, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
– How many of you, I know,
I saw the registration list. How many of you this is the first time you came to our group? Can I see a show of hands? Holy smokes. Every time I’m surprised. There are so many new people. Give them a round of applause please. And you showed up at the right time because this is the last meeting that we have before the summer begins. In July and August, we’re
not gonna have a meeting so please, don’t show up. Nobody’s gonna be here. August I’m gonna take a month off, and then September, we’ll resume again. Now, I’m always, how many wanna have some fun this evening, yes? – [Crowd] Yes. – Yeah, I wanna do something
a little bit different ’cause you know, we always
play a networking game and how it works. I want to try something new. So tonight, we’re gonna play
a different networking game. It’s known as one of the world’s greatest, if not the world’s greatest
networking activity or game. It’s known as very dynamic. I want to try it out
and see how that works. Now, in front of you or under your seat you should have an
index card of some sort. Hassan, did I give you one? – [Hassan] Yeah.
– Thank you. Okay? You should have one of these. Who doesn’t have one? Put up your hand. Okay, one, two, three. Make sure everybody has one. Keep your hands nice and
high if you don’t have one. Jenny’s coming your way. One there, one there,
a couple there, right? Stephen, yep there. Awesome. Everybody’s got one? Yes? Okay, so here’s how it’s gonna work. The networking game is called, Beehive. This is how it’s gonna work. First of all, I want you to write down before I explain how the process works, I want you to write down
who you want to meet. Who you want to meet in your mind. So an example would be, let’s say you’re looking
for a new bookkeeper. You write down I’m looking
for a good bookkeeper. Or I’m looking for a graphic designer. Who would you, who can you meet that you know is gonna make a difference in your business or in your life? So just take a moment and write that down. And you want to be as
specific as possible. It’s not like, oh, I’m
looking for more clients. That doesn’t help anybody, okay. I’m looking for blank.
– [Man] Just one? – Just one. Or if you’re not 100 percent sure, maybe you can think of
who it would be nice to meet that person. It would be nice to meet blank. Everybody’s got it? How many here are still
like, I’m not so sure? Okay, a couple minutes. Just write down who
you would like to meet. Okay. Then, next step is, we’re
gonna be moving around a lot, just so you know, this is a very active, proactive kind of, not like just sit there and shake hands, exchange business cards. That’s bullshit. Don’t do that. What we’re gonna do is we are
gonna form a group of four. How many?
– [Audience] Four. – Like a small, little circle. I’ll give you a few
minutes, let’s do that. If you’re in a circle, put
your hand nice and high, so I know. Okay, okay. So here’s how it’s gonna work. The game is called Beehive,
so we’re gonna take turns. So here’s how it’s gonna work. You have an index card which states who you want to meet, yes? So first we’re gonna find
what we call a queen bee. Queen bee. And you’re gonna all take
turns to be a queen bee, but we’re gonna find the first one. So among your group, whoever’s
the most good looking will go first, the queen bee. So you guys, kind of, pick. So, and then now, we’re gonna have to find a worker bee. It could be anyone of those out of three. Anyone, everyone will take turns. It doesn’t really matter. So in your group, you
should have a queen bee and a worker bee. Everybody got one? Anybody don’t have one? Okay, so here’s how it’s gonna work, okay? So queen bee and the worker bee. Queen bee, your request,
your request here, who you want to meet, you’re gonna pass your
card to your worker bee. Go ahead and do that. Go ahead and do that. You guys are so excited,
can’t wait to get it. Listen for the instructions, dammit. Worker bee you have
your instruction, right? So think about a typical beehive. What does the queen bee do? – [Woman] They just sit there. – They just sit there, yes. So queen bee, you just sit there. Now worker bee (shushes audience) worker bee, what does worker bee do? – [Audience] Work. – They go out there and
they get honey, right? It’s exactly how it works. Let me demonstrate. Who is the queen bee in your group? Who is the worker bee? What’s the request? Who does Hassan want to meet? – [Man] Somebody who is specialized in increasing self-confidence. – Okay, someone who specializes in increasing self confidence. What happens is, I’m gonna
give you five minutes for this. So Gary would get up, so all
the worker bees would get up. Don’t get up yet. Get up. Would go among each different hive. So Gary would go (buzzing sound), right? Worker bee? Now this worker bee, who’s worker bee? So worker bee would also
be flying around, right? Gary would go, “Who knows someone “who helps other people to
increase self-confidence?” – I do. – You do, okay. Do you have a business card? Who has got, brought a business card? You don’t have a business
card, you’re fucked. It doesn’t work. Does not work that way. If you have a business card, you would give Gary the business card. Pretend this is a business card. So basically, Gary is working
on the queen bee’s behalf, collecting as many
business cards as possible, going from this place to that place to that place to that place. After five minutes, Gary would come back with a stack of business cards, yes? Either they know someone
or they are someone who helps (shushes audience). Then Gary would give that
stack of business cards to who? To the queen, right? Whose job is this to follow
up with these contacts? – [Audience] Queen bee.
– The queen. Now, the queen just sits
there and do nothing. No rejection, nothing. Then, take turns and then
we’ll do the next queen bee, next queen bee, everybody will take turns. Now here’s the thing, when you have a whole bunch of people running around what’s gonna happen is,
it’s gonna be chaos. So here’s how it’s gonna work. When worker bee leaves the hive, how do we know, cause
it’s gonna be so noisy, that we have an empty seat here? We don’t know right? It’s kind of difficult to tell. So these guys when they
have an empty seat, here’s what they’re gonna do. Put up all your hands, both. Over here, over here. Try that. – [Group] Over here, over here. – Then other worker bee would know, oh, there’s an empty spot. Everybody got it? Any questions? No questions? Okay, let’s give it a try. So worker bees stand up. Worker bee. Worker bees stand up. Worker bee, now if
you’re ready worker bee, worker bee, if you’re
ready say, “I’m ready.” – [Man] I’m ready. – Ready, ready? Yeah? Okay. And everybody else should be waving cause there’s an empty spot, right? Say, “Over here.” – [Audience] Over here. – One, two, three, go! Okay, stop. Shhhh. Worker bee go back to your queen bee. Worker bee go back to your queen bee. Now, what if, when you go to your group, because I noticed, you go to a group and you’re asking for, I’m
looking for a graphic designer, and the other person,
one of the group says, “Yeah, I do know someone, “but I don’t have a
business card to give you.” What do you do? – [Woman] Write your name
down and phone number. – Write phone number, email, right? You find a way. So we say, “Great,” then
you give it to them. Which worker bee you think collected the most amount of contacts? Yeah, but who’s collected
the most amount of contacts? Who do you think has
collected the most amount? How many have you
collected as a worker bee? Five. How many? Five. Five. Five. Five. Who’s got six? Seven. How many? Seven? How many? Eight? A round of applause for that. Good, good, good. So what the hell are the
other worker bees doing? Like, worker bee I noticed is not like, “Do you know anyone?” That’s not working, damn. You should be like,
“Hey! Do you know anyone? “Do you know anyone? Do you know anyone? Move on. “Do you know anyone? Do you know anyone? “Do you know anyone?” So I’m gonna up the game. The next group, first of
all find the next queen bee that’s gonna be the next queen bee. The second most good looking
one in the group, okay? Very simple. Listen to this. The worker bee who has
got the most contacts for his or her queen bee, $20 cash. (audience cheers) Okay? $20 cash. Let’s see how hard you work. Are you ready? One, two, three! Okay, which worker bee you think you won? How many? – [Woman] 17. (audience gasps) – Anybody can beat 17? 17? First of all, who was the worker bee? Kelly, come up. Round of applause. Thank you, thank you. Now what’s the lesson here? Money talks. Bullshit walks. Very simple, very simple. Let me pause for a second, we still have two more rounds to go. When you, queen bee, when you collect all these business cards, these contacts, let me ask you a question. What’s the best way to follow up? If you were to type an email, what should you say in the subject line and what should you say
in the email message? Let me answer your question. I want to give you a template. What are we gonna say? Good. What would you say? Yep, could be. So subject line could be, and then you could say in the
beginning of the paragraph, something like, “Hey, glad to have met you “at entrepreneurs group. “Remember we played the Beehive game. “I collected all these contacts. “Do you know or are you
someone who would do whatever?” Right? Yes? – [Man] How would you like to make $10,000 a month with little work? – Oh that’s not true. No, you might as well just say, “Hey, you know what? “I know someone from Nigeria “that’s got $350 million. “I just want to put it
into your bank, man. “I’ll give you 10 percent.” Don’t do that. Actually, you know what. I actually did reply one
time when I got those emails. And I replied and the guy was talking, I was just curious with how it works. I reply and they said, “Oh just give me your
bank account information, “everything else, and don’t
worry, it’ll be fine.” I said, “Okay, I’ll give you
bank account information.” I was just playing with the guy. “Bank account information and then what?” And he was talking about these stories. It’s actually pretty good marketing. I think some people fall for that, but that’s kind of another story. Remember, you’ve got to follow up. It’s no good to have all
these business contacts if you don’t follow up. It’s whose job to follow up? – [Audience] The queen bee. So now, let’s find a third queen bee and a third worker bee. You got it? Queen bee, worker bee. Nice, nice. And queen bee, make your request. Not yet, not yet, not yet. Not yet, not yet. Everybody’s got it, yes? Okay, one, worker bee ready, two. Oh, hold on. Hold on, hold on, hold
on, hold on, hold on. Listen, listen, listen. One, two, three, go! So who’s got the most amount
of contacts, worker bee? – [Man] 15 right here. – 15? – [Woman] 18! – 18? Anyone can beat 18? No? Okay, now. Not yet. I have a prize. Now, last round. Let’s find, whoever was
left, the two people. Who’s gonna be the worker bee,
who’s gonna be the queen bee? Everybody’s got it? Yeah, whoever’s left, right? We’ve done three rounds, right? So decide who’s gonna be the last queen bee and worker bee. Everybody’s got it? Everybody’s got it? Yes? Yes? Yes? Yes? Shhh, okay, shh. Okay, so everybody’s got it? Not yet, not yet. I haven’t announced the prize. I haven’t announced the prize. So 18 is the highest, right? There’s a lesson here. Listen to this, there’s a lesson here. Pay attention. Some of you will get it,
some of you might not, but there’s a lesson here. So 18 is the highest for tonight. So one more round to go, right? This worker bee, whoever gets the highest for tonight, $50. – [Audience] Whoa. – Listen, listen, listen, listen. Listen, listen. So you gotta beat 18, minimum. Yes? So worker bee are you ready? Worker bee are you ready? Go! So you guys won? Worker bee, what’s the most amount? How many? – [Man] 18. – 18? 18? How many? Spencer, how many? – [Spencer] Six.
– Six. Okay. 18? 18? Now, listen to this. If you were me what would you do? Who’s the winner? – [Audience] Both of them. – I don’t do 50/50. Why? Why not? – [Man] I would have each person, one at a time, the two of them, one at a time stand in front of the room and tell us what they do and
what they’re looking for, and whoever we resonate
with, will have won. – [Woman] I agree.
– Is that fair? – [Audience] Yep. – Cause you could have 18 garbage names. How would I know? It’s quality over quantity, right? So why don’t we do that? Worker bee, worker bee. And 18 worker bee, yes. Can I get a mic? Is it on? This is serious stuff. – No kidding. – No kidding. Introduce yourself, so they know. – I’m Stu McDonald. – Hi, Stu. – [Audience] Hey Stu.
– Hey. Okay. I’ve got an investor looking to invest in a small
business, startup or existing. – Oh okay.
– Any industry. – Any industry, okay. Let me see some of those
contacts that are collected. Lot of business cards, email addresses. That’s pretty good. Also, to be fair, I’m
gonna count them, okay? One, two, three, four, five. I’m only counting 15. Count 18 for me, let’s see. One second. One, that’s good. – Two, three. – Four, five, okay. This is six?
– Mmm-hmm. – Everybody count.
– [Audience] Nine. – Ten. – Start from again. – There’s ten so far. – Okay, one, two, three, four, five Five on here. – [Audience] Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. – Oh, 16. Awe. – Are you sure no more contacts? – No, I didn’t bring any. – I guess I won. – Wait, you never know. You never know, a lot of
people are not honest here. – I get too excited. – But there is a lesson here. What’s the lesson? – [Man] Always verify.
– [Woman] Learn how to count. Not learn how to count. How does this apply to your business? Just because your employee
tells you something. Trust, but verify. Say it with me. Trust,
– [Audience] Trust, – But verify.
– [Audience] But verify. – So great, let’s check this out. – So how many? – One, two, three. – What’s the contact information? – Here. This one. – This doesn’t count,
you just have the name. – Thank you. A name doesn’t help. One, two, three. – Four. – One, two, three, four. – There’s a fourth one here. One, two, three, oh yeah. – Three right? Four. – [Audience] Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. Oh! – Now, she could’ve won
because the two names are just the names without
the contact information. So as a worker bee, what’s your job? – [Audience] Get the information. – Right? So now, that might
be the perfect person, but I’m like, “Who the hell is that guy?” How am I gonna find the person? Quality, quality. – [Woman] Excuse me? – Yes? – [Man] There are two more. – Oh, I’ve got two more. All right, all right. – They were on the floor. – Oh perfect, so 18. – Way to go. – Round of applause, round of applause. Let me present this. Great job, great job. Great job, great job, great job. Now, quickly, what have you
learned from this exercise? Was it fun? – [Audience] Yeah! – What have you learned from it? – [Man] Money talks. – Money talks? Attention. – [Woman] Trust, but verify. – Trust, but verify, yes. – [Man] I noticed it was easier to get contacts for someone else, than it was more for myself. – How many find it’s
easier to get contacts for someone else than for yourself? Yes? You don’t feel rejected,
you’re just working on people’s behalf, right? Queen bee, how does it
feel when you have someone working on your behalf? – [Audience] Nice. – What else have you learned? Yes? – [Man] That the success of the worker bee is determined by the
queen bee’s instructions. – Okay, well said. Say that again. – [Man] The success by the worker bee is mostly determined by the
queen bee’s instructions. – Now some of the queen
bees, you’re giving away, “I’m just looking for whatever, right?” You go. So when the instructions are not clear, how do you expect the worker bee to carry out the order, right? Now if I’m the worker bee, if I want to win the money, what I would have done is I would actually convince the queen bee for something simple. “Oh, what? You’re looking
for an entrepreneur? “I got it.” I would’ve gotten thirty of them right? And then I would probably work a deal with the queen bee, if I win 50/50. That’s the entrepreneur
mindset, you get it? – [Audience] Yeah. So we’re gonna take a
short 10 minute break. How long?
– [Audience] 10 minutes. – Do me a favor. Move the chairs back to the way it was. And then I’m gonna introduce
