Team building Training – The Timeline #79On August 10, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Necessities for this exercise: a long cord, paper, pencils and clothespins. You hang the cord somewhere in the room in a way it is visible for everyone. You tell the team each person can write down his name on the paper and tell why he joined this group. In this example it’s a group of teachers and someone writes down: Paul I joined this group because I was hired at this school as a math teacher. I was really happy because this place has a great energy. Paul hangs his name somewhere on the cord. Now the next person writes in this case down: Maria. And tells: I joined this group because I was transferred from another department and had no choice. But now I like it here a lot. She hangs the paper on the cord cronological correct regarding to Paul’s paper. The timeline is from left to right. She joined later than Paul so she hangs her paper on the right side of Paul’s paper. When everyone has placed his paper on the line you ask the team to think of a memorable positive moment that the team experienced. Each person writes that moment down on a paper. For example: When we went to Rome as a team trip, we really bonded that weekend and shared ideas about teaching. When someone has told and written down his memory memory he hangs the paper on the cord. On a place that is cronological correct compared to the papers with the names on it. Someone else recalls: The Christmas celebration last year. I recall how we sung Christmas songs and laughed together. He also hangs his paper on the cord in the right place in time. When each person has told his memory and put his paper somewhere on the cord one by one people who think something isn’t correct in the time line can correct this now and say what isn’t correct. One person says: The Christmas celebration isn’t placed correctly. I was there to so it should be placed after I joined the team. He places his name before christmas. Yes but I wasn’t there, because I didn’t work here yet. So it has to be the case I joined the group later then you did. Paul now places his name after Bob and Christmas. Someone else now comments: The time we all were dancing at a bar couldn’t have happened later in time than the bowling evening because I remember that at the bowling center we looked at pictures of the dancing night. In this case the bowling moment is placed a bit further in time. Go on like this until everyone agrees unanimously the timeline is correct so they have a clear overview in time of when someone joined the team and also of all the highlights the team experienced. The trainer guides the team and applies variations to the exercise. What kind of variations you can read below this video on Youtube. And haven’t you subscribed yet?
