Team Bonding Ideas – The First Thought #18On August 14, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
During this exercise the team will form two lines and face each other. The participants that are standing across from each other will silently make eye contact for approximately five seconds. After a brief moment of making eye contact one of the two lines will move one spot to the right. Everyone n remains silent. Everyone makes five seconds of eye contact again with someone new in front of him. This also happens in silence. If people burst out laughing you can reassure them that that’s ok as long as they maintain eye contact and are not talking. Now the participants from the first line move another spot and the other line remains in place. Repeat this until everyone from the first line has made eye contact with everyone from the second line. Next, the participants will speak out the first thought that comes to mind after making eye contact. based on a selected theme. In this case: a positive characteristic. The moving row begins. After a brief moment of making eye contact the participants from the first row speak out the positive trait that first come to their minds. Tell the team that they may say the first thing that comes up without consciously thinking about it. For example: “strong and confident”. Now the roles switch. The other participant speaks out his first positive trait without thinking. For example: “patient”. The first row moves one place and repeats the exercise. Keep doing this until both rows have exchanged, in this case, six times a positive trait. Now you change the category. The team will do the exercise with the theme: “an area for improvement”. Everyone makes eye contact and speaks out an area of improvement for the other person based on the first impression. For example: “too perfectionistic”. Note that it’s important here to speak out an area for improvement without thinking about it. After everyone from the first row has spoken out the areas for improvement, the roles switch again. Now the participants from the other row do the same. The first row moves to the right until everyone has faced every person from the other line. In the last part of the exercise everyone will speak out their first impression based on a light hearted theme. For example: “the first animal that comes to mind”. This theme will be played out exactly the same as the previous two. After this last round the team will form a circle. The exercise will be discussed and every participant shares what he did expect and what he didn’t expect to hear. For example: “I did expect people to say I am patient but I did not expect to hear I should stand up for myself more often.” Go clockwise so everyone can share their experiences. During this exercise the participants get a clearer view of how the team sees them and the rest of the team sees if someone agrees with what was being said about him. The trainer guides the team during the exercise and brings variations. What kind of variations you can read below this video on Youtube.
