Perfektes Zusammenspiel: Abbiege-Assistent und MirrorCam bieten noch mehr SicherheitOn October 20, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Safety is a precious asset, road traffic is becoming more complex. It is important to provide truck drivers with the best assistance systems available. My name is Carsten Barth. I am an engineer at Mercedes-Benz Trucks and work on assistance systems for our trucks. In this field, the new Actros has made a huge leap forward. The new assistance systems are not only available in the Mercedes-Benz Safety Truck. They can be ordered by any customer. This includes the new Active Drive Assist, which makes partially automated driving a reality. Let’s focus on the new mirror cam and how it interacts with the sideguard assist. The new Actros is the first mass-produced truck in the world featuring the mirror cam. It improves aerodynamics and lowers fuel consumption, but above all it increases safety! The driver has a much better all-round view. The view to the front right is wide open because there are no external rear-view mirrors. This is very convenient when manoeuvring the truck, and it simply improves safety. Many drivers are on the road with poorly adjusted mirrors, which results in blind spots. The mirror cam solved this problem because the display produces the same complete view from any angle. The displays provide support in various situations. When cornering, the image from the camera pans along, so that I can keep the end of the trailer in view. When changing lanes, distance lines make it easier to judge the distance to vehicles travelling behind me. Warnings from the sideguard assist also appear on the mirror cam display. Mercedes-Benz Trucks was the first truck maker to introduce this system a few years ago. The sideguard assist supports the driver when changing lanes, moving off and cornering. The system can detect moving and stationary objects located inside the warning zone. It warns the driver of their presence using visual and acoustic signals. It provides a better protection for the most vulnerable road users – like cyclists. At the same time, we need to always bear in mind that these are assistance systems. Such systems cannot change the laws of physics. Nor can they relieve drivers of their responsibility. They simply provide assistance. However, our systems are improving all the time. This is evident in the new Actros, and that is something we at Mercedes-Benz Trucks can be just a little bit proud of.
