Little League team rallies after teammate passes awayOn December 23, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
IT WAS A SPECIAL SEASON FOR THE FOUNTAIN INN 10 AND 11 YEAR OLD BASEBALL TEAM… A TEAMMATE INSPIRED THE BLUE ROCKS….TO BE AT THEIR BEST…. WYFF NEWS 4’S RICARDO LECOMPTE HAS THE STORY…. EVERY KID REMEMBERS THEIR FIRST SEASON ON THE BASEBALL DIAMOND. “How about left center” FOR 10-YEAR OLD MICHAEL BLAKE.. HE JUST WANTED THE SAME CHANCE TO PLAY LIKE THE OTHER KIDS. Shaun Blake – Michael’s Dad Just a typical all-around boy you know. WHAT WASN’T TYPICAL WAS THE HEART CONDITION MICHAEL WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AT FOUR MONTHS OLD. AORTIC STENOSIS.A NARROWING OF THE AORTIC VALVE IN HIS HEART. WITH CAREFUL MONITORING..MICHAEL COULD PLAY BASEBALL.. AND HIS FIRST SEASON WOULD BE WITH THE FOUNTAIN INN BLUE ROCKS. He never got frustrated, never showed any irritation. He was just a nice, friendly, just a really good player to hang out with. MICHAEL SHOWED STEADY IMPROVEMENT AS THE SEASON GOT UNDERWAY..BUT THE DEVELOPMENT CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP. AFTER FINISHING UP A RUN. AT THE END OF A PRACTICE IN EARLY MAY.. it was maybe 30 seconds and he fell over, and that was pretty much it, I ran out there to him. Had one of the coaches call 9-1-1 as soon as I got over there. My first reaction was to just get the kids away, and so I pulled them away to the side and talked a little bit, prayed and just kind of keep their minds focused on something else. Because you knew pretty early that it was something serious. MICHAEL WAS RUSHED TO GREENVILLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.HE DIED LATER THAT NIGHT FROM HIS HEART CONDITION.. I can’t get what I saw out of my mind. But I know they did everything that they could. Our biggest concern was just getting the kids back. it kind of brought them closer and gave them something more to play for. THE BLUE ROCKS DEDICATED THE REST OF THE SEASON IN THE MEMORY OF MICHAEL. THE ENTIRE TEAM WORE THE NUMBER 6.WITH BLAKE ON THE BACK OF THEIR UNIFORMS. Joan Blake – Michael’s mom It was really, they were just so loving to us, and it was just a beautiful thing. And a beautiful thing happened on the diamond.the Blue Rocks didn’t lose the rest of the season.going a perfect 15 and oh… The group of 10 and 11 year olds clamed the city championship…. AND MICHAEL BLAKE WAS NAMED THE MVP OF THE FOUNTAIN INN LEAGUE… it was almost a perfect season. It was a perfect season for them. And it really it couldn’t have ended any better than it, other than Michael being here to enjoy it with them. I don’t feel like he’s gone. I feel like he’s still playing baseball with us and hitting. I never think that’s he’s gone. I think he’s outside in the field, right now when we are playing, with us. He’s our angel in the outfield IN FOUNTAIN INN.RICARDO LECOMPTE.WYFF NEWS 4 SPORTS..
