Learning Enhancement Team – “Group Work” – by Paula BernaschinaOn November 6, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Hi! My name is Paula Bernaschina and I’m from the Learning Enhancement Team and I work with the faculty of Science and Technology. Group work is a very important part of your experience at university. In many of your modules, you’ll
need to do group work and this is because we often work in groups in the workplace.
When you are in a group at university, there are many different problems that can come up. One of them is communication or the lack of communication. If students aren’t speaking to each other, or are speaking over each other, then no-one knows what is happening in the group, and the group then cannot succeed. It’s important that everyone is listening
to each other and thinking about each other’s ideas. It’s very important as a student to
think about yourself as a group member and what kind of group member you are. Are you the passive group member who doesn’t contribute to the group? Are you the absent group member
who never turns up for group meetings? Or are you the group leader who likes to take charge and organise the materials? It’s important for you to think about yourself and your role in the group if you want to be successful in your group work assessment. If you’d like to find out more about group work, please look at the Learning Enhancement Team webpage or you can even contact me if you’re a student from Science and Technology and we can talk about your group work and what conflicts that might be arising.
