IKEA Co-worker video stories, JustinOn October 9, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Hey everybody, this is Justin McMahon.
Senior Sales Leader at the Service Office at IKEA USA. My wife and I met at an IKEA. That’s where we met, fell in love
and got married a year later. So it’s a great IKEA love story. We decided to relocate to Philadelphia because that’s where IKEA’s
North American headquarters are located. The job opportunities in this market with the
Service Office being here as well as two stores there was a lot of potential for growth for the
both of us individually within IKEA. I, as a Senior Sales Leader, am responsible
for products of a certain area of the home. Responsible for everything about that product from start to finish. From pricing to forecasting to merchandising in our stores
and ultimately to the customers home the value that that product brings to our customers once it is in their house. I spend the majority of my time on a competitive analysis of our products. Everything from the function of the product to the pricing of the product. By function of the product, specifically we look at colours, materials, trends. There might be a possibility that we don’t have this within our range,
something that our competitors do have we identify that as a gap in the range. So we will then work to
develop products to fill that gap within the range. My leadership background had nothing to do with business.
I actually went to school for computer technology. Just realised that my heart was in sales. I’m a people person and that’s where I want to be,
in front of people and learning about their individual needs and lifestyles. So more so than business it’s the interest in people that has helped me in a big way. In my role now, I am not directly in front of the customer, but I am giving
the entire country information that will help them with the customer. Previously in my IKEA roles, I could only influence
the customers in my one direct market. In my role that I am in now, I can influence the entire United States. Part of the reason why I like working for IKEA is
the work/life balance that we are provided with. The time that we get to spend with our families and
doing the activities that we love outside of work really reenergises myself to be the best person I can be at work.
