How To Tell Your Coworker That He SmellsOn October 13, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Meet Josh. He’s a stand up guy and a hard
working employee. But Josh suffers from one problem that the entire office knows about
and he has no clue. How To Tell Your Coworker That He Smells. And then I said with fronds
like these, who needs anemones! Am I right? Alright guys, I gotta get back to work. Let’s
throw some high fives around. No? Alright, I’ll catch you guys later. Is it just me or
is he getting worse? That’s cause it’s Friday. I heard he only showers on Mondays. I mean
it’s a good thing we don’t have to smell him on the weekends right? Wait, isn’t tomorrow
the company board game night? I think we’re playing Twister! Oh no. That’s it, somebody’s
gotta tell him that he stinks. We gotta be straight with him. I wouldn’t do that if I
were you, think about what might happen. Josh, you stink. Woah, that’s a little harsh. Why
don’t you try again. You guys smell that, something stinks around here. Just saying.
Exposing one of your co-workers in front of everyone could really embarrass him. Plus,
making subtle hints could actually make him feel alienated. Ok, well someone’s gotta tell
him about it. Maybe I can set up a team meeting or something and tell everyone. Uh-uh-uh.
That’s not the best approach either. Think about what could happen. Thanks for getting
together here guys. I’m here to talk about hygiene in the workplace. Any of us could
have a body odor issue. Maybe I could have a body odor issue. It’s Josh that smells,
everyone knows. Finally they’re doing something about it. Jake. It’s definitely Jake that
smells. Could it be me? Oh my God, is it me? So any of us could have body odor issues.
Or maybe none of us have body odor issues. And maybe some of us need to shower every
day or maybe none of us need to shower every day. A general office meeting or email addressing
everyone about the problem might not be effective since it can come across as too vague. Your
co-worker may not realize he has a body odor issue and publicizing the problem may create
unnecessary gossip and a sense of worry or uncertainty in the office. You know what I’m
gonna tell him and I am gonna do it the right way. Hey Josh before you head out for the
night, do you have a second to chat? The coworker purposely chose the end of the day to speak
to Josh, so that Josh could take time after work to think about it, rather than hanging
over him during his workday. She offered guidance around showering, wearing deodorant and washing
clothes. While the situation was awkward, Josh is now thankful that someone took the
time to approach him in a respectful manner. Now that it’s Monday, Josh is a new man!
