How to achieve work life balance | v4.05

(dog barks) (upbeat music) – How’s that for a fun toy? All right, she’s quite a driver, huh? Let’s get this week going, shall we? All right, we made it Tennessee. We have a really great campsite. We’re just here for a couple
days, taking a week off, hanging out with Kelly and the girls, really trying to spend
some time with the family, unwinding and staying away
from email and conference calls and just really enjoying some time. Kelly and I certainly take
opportunities, when I travel for work, to spend a weekend
here and a weekend there. But it’s also important to
really just take some time with the girls and spend
some good, quality time and being present. So we’re here for two days and then we’re gonna
be heading to Kentucky. (upbeat music) So it’s about 7:30, kinda
early, Monday morning. We’ve got a full day here,
right outside of Nashville at the Priest Lake. It’s absolutely gorgeous here. So I’ve done a few
vacation vlogs in the past. This is one is really important to me because, since I took
over the ITS leader role, 15 months, I’ve also celebrated
my 20th year anniversary working, just working really. But as many of you
know, I’ve been with PWC almost my entire 20-year career. I think for some of the hardcore fans, who know I had a little 11-month
hiatus early in my career to go work for a law firm,
but for the most part, I’ve been working for 20 straight years. And what’s amazing about it, first of all, besides just the duration is just how much I’m still
passionate about what I do and how much I still
really enjoy what I do. And taking a little time off, I think, helps give you some
perspective and reflect on what’s really important. And my job is very important
to my identity, to myself, but the happiness that I get in life is from surrounding myself
by the people that I love and that love me. And it’s really important to
be able to take some time off and spend some time with your loved ones. And, for me, that’s my wife and my dogs. And I also have a lot of
other great support system and loved ones. Hi, mom. I think, really, what I’m gonna spend, what I wanna spend some time on vacation is really reflecting on
what’s important to me and whose helped get me
to where I am in my career and making sure that they
understand what an important role that they play in my
life and in my career, and that I couldn’t have
been here without Kelly and those others that have
supported me along the way. So it’s nice to reflect
a little bit on that during your time off. So I’m gonna, now, just watch
the sun come up over the lake. Like, how nice is this? All right, we’re on our way to Kentucky. I don’t actually even
know where we’re going, but I’m driving, Kelly’s
gonna be the navigator. It’s gonna be awesome. (upbeat rock music) So we made it to Cumberland Falls and, like any good family
outing, we brought the kids. We’re gonna put them on gentle leaders and, hopefully, they’re well
behaved with some other pups. There’s the family. – I know, bubba. – All right, let’s go check out the Falls. (upbeat music) Jodie is gonna be turning 13 next weekend. And so she doesn’t get around
quite as well as she used to. But that’s why Kelly
insists on carrying her up and down the stairs. So I get a lot of questions about, like, why the Airstream, why the RV? As a guy who spends two
to 300,000 miles a year in the air, this is just
such a nice, mindful way to relax and vacation. Having the flexibility to
be able to change your plans and just to be able to drive
where and whenever you want to, there’s a freedom there
that I just really enjoy. And I think that, when you vacation and when you’re trying
to get away from work, doing something that is
fundamentally different from that day-to-day experience, I think, is really important. We were gonna stay here for four days. We realize we did the one thing that we actually wanted to do around here and we’re gonna go to Mammoth Cave next. Oh, yeah, and check out the girls. There’s Luce, where’s Jode? Jode, that doesn’t seem very
comfortable, sweetheart. – Got some stuff! (chuckles) – Is this with our credit from– – Yeah, do you wanna see what you got? – Oh, boy. – Oh, yeah, some–
– It’s turned into an unboxing.
– Wait. – Flaming hot peanuts.
– All right. – And then… Oh, this is something I hate, hate, hate, but I got you a retractable (laughs) fly swatter.
– Wow. A fly swatter slash selfie stick. But I don’t think it’s a selfie stick.
– Oh, yeah. That’s probably where they got the idea. – If anybody who’s watching
in the Dominican Valley wants to steal that
invention, you can have it. – Wait. And then this is your
shirt that you don’t need. And wait, just in case you’re wondering, in case this isn’t big enough, phew! I just got myself a sweatshirt
’cause I’m always cold, so–
– Okay. – (laughs) – They wouldn’t refund our credit. They wouldn’t–
– Wait, wait, guess what? Guess how much I had left,
guess how much I had left. – A dollar?
– No. – Less than a dollar?
– One penny. – Oh, and she’s good at math too. All right, let’s get–
– I’m terrible at math– – on the road.
– usually. (upbeat music) – So we’re at Mammoth Cave National Park. Jodie can’t walk a ton, as you saw from the Cumberland
Falls, but we’re gonna go check out a couple of the trails. Hopefully, Jodie is up to the task. All right, let’s go find the girls. We are doing the, I don’t
know what we’re doing. The Sloan’s Crossing Pond Walk. See, it’s a little circle. We think it’s about Jodie’s speed. There’s a boardwalk for the entire walk, so we’re gonna go do that. All right, so we made
it back to St. Louis. Drive wasn’t so bad, about
five hours from Mammoth Canyon. This vacation is really
a good lesson in life. First of all, spending time
with those that you love and your family, and decompressing and getting away from
work is really important to just general wellbeing. You hear a lot about
being grateful these days. And when I think about my job, when I think about my family life, when I think about my work-life balance, when I think about the experience
that I had this past week, there are ups and downs, there are things that could go better, there are regrets along the way. But it’s just really
important to be grateful for those moments, sometimes flashes, hopefully, long moments,
where things are going well, where you’re able to enjoy your life, enjoy the fruits of your
labor, enjoy your family and those that love you
and those that you love. It’s really important to be
grateful for those moments and those times. And sometimes they
don’t come often enough, when things are going poorly and, frankly, when things are going really well, we often don’t pause enough to
be grateful for those things. And I think this week, really,
living just a simple life in a tiny house, I mean, a really tiny spot with my girls really makes me grateful. So thanks for tuning in
