Group Energizer Activities – Forming Shapes #11On August 9, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
During the exercise the team will walk criss cross through the room. You instruct the team to form a straight line when you clap your hands. You let the team continue walking for a short while before you unexpectedly clap your hands. Now without talking the team will have to form a straight line. Once the line is formed the team stands still for a bit before they continue to walk again after your clap signal. The team intuitively know who will take what spot while forming a shape. Everyone’s place in the shape is essential and giving each other space is of great importance. Now you do the same with another form, for example a circle. When you clap your hands again the team will form a circle as quick as they can without talking. The team stands still for a moment before the walk through the room when you clap your hands. A third shape could be a triangle. Once again you clap unexpectedly and the team has to form a triangle. Sometimes it can take a while before the team has a good sense of each other before the shape is formed. The team stands still for a bit and when you clap your hands they continue walking through the room. The next shape they will form will be one of the three they previously made without knowing which one it will be. In this case a line, circle or triangle. Clap your hands and the team will form one of the shapes. There will be likely some confusion because people have a different shape in mind. But when everyone has a good sense of each other they will form the shape naturally. In this case a line. When you clap your hands the team will walk though the room again. This time the team will try to form a shape they come up with in the moment, still without talking. This can be any form. As long as it is clear for everyone what form they eventually will end up with. You clap your hands. At start it can be a bit confusing because people have different views of what shape it is going to be. But eventually the team will succeed to form a shape they collectively came up with. In this case an X. When you clap your hands again the team starts to walk. Now the team will form a self made shape without waiting on your clap signal. Only when people let go of their personal ideas they will be able to form a shape at the same time. In this case a star. Now the team also starts to walk again without waiting on your clap signal. For every part of this exercise you can make the team form as many shapes as you think is suitable. For the next shape the team also won’t walk through the room anymore. They merge their current shape directly into a new one when they feel the timing is right. In this case they form the number seven. They will stand still for a while so it becomes clear for everyone what shape they have made. At a random moment they will immediately form a new shape they come up with on the spot. In this case a pyramid shape. They stand still for a bit and from the pyramid shape they form another shape. In this case, the shape of a chair. The trainer guides the team, gives advice and brings variations into the exercise. What kind of variations you can do, you can read below this video on Youtube.
