Goal! Soccer For a Better Future Part 4 – TeamworkOn November 8, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Welcome as I’m walking to the football center where I’ll meet 120 kids it’s all great. And they’re coming from this area as you can see. These kids are coming from this area, it’s where they’re facing challenges like drugs, and alcohol abuse. We are here in Khayelitsha which is hosting the first Football for Hope center. So Football for Hope centers are part of the campaign for 20 Centers for 2010, which is the official legacy campaign of the World Cup. It is led by two organizations. The mission of 20 centers for 2010 is to create community centers across Africa, which use football as a tool to bring education and public health towards disadvantaged communities. The Football for Hope center in Khayelitsha is going to link you into public health services and education. It’s not about playing the game of football, it’s rather using the language of football and specific roles which children can understand. It’s so much easier for them if it’s connected to their world. In South Africa there’s a huge amount of hope and a huge amount of opportunity. One of the things we want to do is help young people realize that that opportunity is out there, to help them see that they have a future and give them hope for the future Soccer is a great tool because it’s easy to apply it in the context of a hands on example, so that we can focus on very obvious and transferable skills that the kids can use in other arenas of their lives I’ve learned so many things with soccer: team work, leadership. And it’s going to help me be successful, be a successful person, work with different people, and reach my goals. I’ve learned so many things playing soccer and playing soccer in the streets. So many of my friends now they’re behind the line because they did drugs, they did gangs, they skipped school. I started playing soccer and I stayed away from them. I couldn’t hang out with them anymore. But I made the right choices, and now they’re behind the line, I’m graduating and I’m going to school In order to achieve your goals both on the field and off the field, you have to be able to work with other people. And learn how to manage your own role and your own behavior. The soccer team is a communication network on the field. Everybody when they have the ball or even when they don’t has to be responsible for themselves, you have to take a leadership role. I think sports can play a major role in our society today. Sports can bring love, community, respect. It can teach our kids to accept vivacity. It does change kids, it changes families and it changes communities. Kids that wouldn’t even have been exposed to the sport are not only playing soccer, but using it as a vehicle for them to get those opportunities to go on to higher education and much better employment opportunities.
