Goal Setting and How To Achieve Your Goals (4 minutes)

On August 15, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie

I find that the most common problem when people are setting goals as this one is they either set too big of a goal so it feels really intimidating when you set a really big goal if you don’t even know where to start conversely people set to small goals and then they hit them and then they feel very complacent as to where they’re at big goals seem insurmountable seem very distant to us so the key is you got to break a bigger goal into smaller pieces or steps and you keep breaking it down so here’s a big goal here’s the monthly goal here’s the weekly go here’s the daily goal here’s the minute-by-minute goal now I have a question for you what is your goal we have to have very clear goals clear goals clear results fuzzy goals fuzzy results it could be about your revenue about your health about your creativity but whatever it is what is your goal and you need to write that sucker down it needs to be quantifiable objective something that you can measure you have to assign a deadline to it there’s lots of theories on this it doesn’t matter who you talk to from Tony Robbins Jack Canfield when you know your goal goal setting and you write it down using the neuromotor skills that you have it’s almost like magic that it will come true I think one of the keys to helping you to achieve your goal is to see progress so when you have a really big goal you don’t know if you’re getting anywhere closer for example I want to look really good for summer and I need to get a six-pack now there are a lot of steps that I have to take in order to be able to achieve that goal but if I say every day I’m going to cut 200 calories that makes that a lot easier a lot more manageable for me to take on one of the best tools that I’ve discovered is called scaffolding and these our way of thinking about scaffolding is the magic stairway in order for you to get from point A to point B try breaking the goal down into smaller bite-sized pieces here’s what I mean let’s say one of your goals is I want to grow as an artist well that sounds really lofty amorphous and it’s hard to get your head wrapped around that wouldn’t you think about growth let’s break it down well I want to get better with Adobe Illustrator Photoshop InDesign and Premiere let’s say those are the four things I need as an artist to become better now each one of those things can be broken into smaller goals yet how do you get better at Adobe Illustrator well some of the things that you might think of or I need to learn how to use the pen tool really well I need to know how to build shapes quickly I need to know how to draw precisely maybe I need to learn about gradients and just best practices in terms of navigation and keyboard shortcuts now you see the big goal of I’m going to grow as an artist or a designer has been broken down into four pieces and those four pieces can then be broken into even smaller pieces chunking is power you don’t want to over chunk where you’re trying to bite the whole darn thing together you also don’t want to under chunk we you make a million pieces of something if you make enough reason to fall through it you want but you make the task overwhelming you’ll be overwhelmed what is chunking it’s taking all that’s coming at you and putting it into idealized sized groups that your mind can handle okay we cannot end this video by talking about goal-setting and working towards achieving your goal if you just walk away and do nothing here’s what I want you to do I want you to pick out a goal that you’ve been setting aside something that you really want to accomplish and try to apply the principles in which you’ve learned today now you have a clear plan on how to move forward in caramel see CL even our car [Music] [Applause] you [Music]

That example with the scaffolding using the Adobe programs was so relatable. Because I have been saying I want to be a better artist for a good while, but I really didn't know how to break it down or quantify it.

Entrepreneur created a free mini course around goal setting, it was held over a month or so and it covered the methods business planners use to build strategies for large companies. If you'd like to learn more about what Chris is saying in further detail, google "The Goal Standard Challenge"

I have a question, How can you feed your designers hunger of getting better as designers? I have been in the situation where I see some of the designers potential but they lack focus or that urge to become amazing. is this a posible scenario because I tried giving soft feedback, thoug feedback and I came to notice that if peoples life goal is not necessarily clear then it becomes very hard to have certainty of their work ethic. My question is, should I try by all means to keep the same people or just pass and hire new people? itยดs a situation where I struggle a lot beign a new entreprenur with a very small staff.

making a "too big goal" isn't "goal setting", it's not setting your goal at all, it's writing a check to feel good about it then get satisfied by how big the goal is, as well as the fact how you managed to set such a big goal, this kind of goal isn't a goal, it's a type of ego basing on a weak self because they want to feel safe, successful, needed, superior than other same level of person, not because they are indeed that way, but because they are weak, the goal is also surreal, bragging, self-servicing, unrealistic, soulless and pointless.
a real goal is never too big, it's even possible to be too big that it gets transcended into an eternal fuel that you realized you will never see the end of the sea but your passion stay true throughout your whole lifetime, then you dived your whole life into the thing you are passionate about, spontaneously.

the advice is mostly useless(no disrespect), especially for the first type of goal and goal setting, it's impossible to breakdown, or even to make a sense at all, this is what it is from the first place, it's fundamentally a shallow idea that you can't possibly break down or analyze, you can't make any form of sense out of an illusional thought, even the person who set the goal can't make sense out of it because it's a concept they can't grasp, this is why they set it the first place, to set a big goal they don't understand so it feels huge and meaningful, remember the point why they set their goal, it's to service themselves.
at the other hand, the real big goal has no point to break, it has no needs to break, it also has no need to tell the person to break down their goal into pieces, the goal isn't big, the person didn't set the goal for the sake of making it big, it's the person the real big factor, when the person set the goal the way it is but it appears huge or delusional to general public, it's the person the real big one, it's not important to tell them to break down the goal to make it seems easy to tackle, also this person is fully understood what the goal really is, because it's their vision and passion, the reason big goal seems impossible to deal with is because the first type of people made it all up to satisfy themselves, so speaking what is real important, it's the pressure they get from small people judging and bullying them, fighting resources in order to survive, as well as the hard to get rare nutrient they need in order to grow strong and healthy, finally it's finding other A players, work together to fight the enormous force of luck, time, and odds, so to me the concept of goal breaking is misleading and point missing, the second type of people is already self-directing they journey to achieve their goal, they don't need you to tell them they need to make the goal seems easy and possible to do, to them it's not about hard or easy, they will do it anyway because they don't make decision basing on whether it's an easy path or not, and the goal is always possible because it's their desire and vision, they understood their passion better than everyone else, visionary is alway practical but creative, fearless and free.

since you are familiar with the concept of Steve Jobs's A Player and C Player, I want to throw you a question, I realized The Futur is primarily, specifically, almost exclusively made for C Players, what's your strategy, what's the decision you made? Are you plan to invest on the majority of C Player instead of the minority A Players? What is the plan, are you plan to work with big education platforms? are they value number more than the right people? Are you value Quantity over Quality?
since you are familiar with A & C Player from Steve Jobs The Lost Interview, I am sure you are also aware of the concept of the difference between A to C player from the different area and different job, the idea of a C taxi driver and an A taxi driver, and a C creative designer and creative programmer to A's, are you value C player more over the A player? why are you trying to institutionalize and standardize elements from A player's surface behavior into a refined recipe or an order and ask C player to follow? they are still a C player, they are not desired to do what you told them to do because they were asked to do so, they are surely not getting the real meaning behind these recipes, C players were doing it because you asked them, A players were doing it already, you are either ignore the C player or do things to lead them, attract them, elevate them, it's an indirect process and not a proactively possible thing, you need people start to become A player from their inside, you can't use external force to transform a C player into an A player, it's not how human being work. I was not even talking about the fixed factor like the ability of your body and the quality of your brain, which can not be changed, unfortunately.

so what you value the most, quantity or quality? you want to invest a huge amount of C player and get the same people in the end, or to elevate people, help other A players, team up with them, build an organic and solid relationship with them, then do great things with them that will truly and profoundly elevate the portfolio of you, your team, your organization? what I want to say is you should look for another Ben, or even another Chris Do; by spending your time on C player, you are losing a huge amount of value because you are paying the price of opportunity, the cost of taking the option of investing C player, resulting no valuable ingredients A player need and want, which also helps nothing to C players, you were focusing on insignificant things that have less of helpfulness for creativity, productivity, aesthetics, design sense, mindset, teamwork, as an Artist, Designer, Entrepreneur, you need best understanding on design and art, vast knowledge on everything, latest and most advanced production toolset / technique / mindset, as well as the right quality to make other A company knock your door asking you to work on the same project with them, but I find very less of content so far especially on the art / design side, all of your business episode require the fact the work is good already(almost none of your viewers has truly good work, unfortunately, it's shitty, it's the level of work produced by shitty people posting comments asking professionals to look at their portfolio on Behance), it's no point to get more players that are as good as some of your "junior staff" appeared on some earlier episodes that always requires you to do the extra work for them, don't pretend, don't lie, I saw your episode, I saw what your assignment and what your revision is, it's all A instruction over C work, they did the labor work but the design sucked, you need more A player like you, not more C player.

In the early days, human being requires each of us to contribute our best to gather power through number, in order to survive, but now it's the age of what I called "The Age of S Player", it's not even an A, it's S, it's an age of small group of S player trump over the entire world, I don't even need to explain or argue on this, this is why we need universal wage to get rid of job-hungry people(incapable C player with no contribution to the world), build automotive factory with AI to "take all the job", this is why we encourage free creative lifestyle / work style, it's because we need to kickstart S player's work desire, create environment that S players respect and attracted by, everything is about to get more S player, they are the energy and currency of this new generation, it's your field, if you have a rich fertilized soil, every shit you crop will grow into giant size really fast.

Please guide me and what should I be more focused on to improve my skills and revenues.
