GL Pease Union Square: Virginia, what else? [ENG SUBS]On February 25, 2020 by Raul Dinwiddie
Hello everybody, new video for il Pipatore in America and new review. As I mentioned in the previous video I would try and review one of the tobaccos I showed in my unboxing video and specifically I decided to review the Union Square by GL Pease by the way I am filming in Union Square here in NYC just for the irony of it But in reality GL Pease is referring to the Union Square in San Francisco since he lives in the bay area and you can see the map of San Francisco on the label but more than anything else I want to enjoy the warm weather to film outdoor as much as I can As during the colder months it will be much more difficult to do so you can hear some music in the background as there is a street artist who’s playing the bagpipe but I hope you can hear my voice so Union Square, why I wanted to try this blend? Why I am so interested in it? Probably I haven’t told you this, however during the past 2 or 3 years I developed a big passion for for Virginia flakes and VaPers as a consequence if you read the description of this tobacco you can immediately understand why I wanted to try it so badly since it is a blend of two different grades of Virginia, golden and red that are subsequently pressed together in a cake and sliced in a flake so it is a flake made of two different virginias, not just one so I am expecting to find a very interesting tobacco with a strong aromatic evolution sorry I am trying to improve the camera’s focus Not much more to add… oh yeah just another thing the production date this was tinned in June 2018 on his blog Pease always recommend to let the tin sit for at least a few months as the tobacco will require some time to “stabilise” after the production And then he is one of the theoretics of tobacco aging and in his opinion a tobacco has a big evolution in the first 2 years of aging to reach the peak after approximately 5 years let’s open the tin! here I am, I moved to a different place as some tourists sat next to me they were pretty noisy and even Italian! So I decided to move to quieter place let’s open this tin and see what we find in it wow! Immediately you can smell a strong sweet smell you can smell plums since Pease are made by C&D I was actually a bit worried that I could find their typical casing which I really don’t like this tin looks very neat a little message from GL Pease he wishes we will like his blend I am trying to lift this cover… finally! let’s see how it looks like in reality it is not really a flake, it is pretty broken. the color, not sure if you can see it, it is pretty light brown the smell is very inviting, I am very happy of the fact that the casing is so natural and not C&D not very humid, it is really ready to be smoked absolutely perfect very sweet, delicious smell a little acidic background smell, something like soy but I don’t want to say anything stupid yes, plums, figs I am very excited! I can’t wait to smoke it so I will let you know how it is! oh hey hi!Here we are After approximately 8 days of exclusively smoking this union square as you can see I smoked a little bit more than half a tin I wasn’t able to smoke more than that as it is a very slow burning tobacco, being a flake each smoke takes at least a hour but mostly, as I am about to explain it is a very fulfilling tobacco if you want to use just one word to describe this tobacco in my opinion this Union Square is an ARISTOCRATIC tobacco very elegant I imagine this Union Square as a noble gentleman very pretentious, not willing to accept any compromise First, it is uncomprimised in the way it is made as it is a bled of virginia without any added flavoring or topping just literally pressing together two different Virginias and nothing else Second, I found it very complex from a flavor standpoint with an incredible evolution of all the aromas and in this sense I only enjoyed it in the most extreme shapes Meaning, either in the Chimney shape that by definition allow for a better evolution of the aroma thanks to a taller chamber but surprisingly it has been really different and interesting in the prince shape as well that as you can see it is approximately half the height of the chimney one but the smaller chamber allows the flavors to concentrate and the sweetest notes emerge much earlier than the Chimney in a very unexpected fashion oddly enough it wasn’t as good and satisfying in the billiards and even in the reverse calabash from which I usually get the best results from Virginias during the first third or even the fist quarter of the bowl it seems lightly bodied very easy to light up and not very tasty but after this stage it starts growing and evolving and you can start tasting some lightly bittersweet notes plums, figs… the same you could detect smelling the tin a very complex and interesting palette it is a tobacco that needs attention and dedication if you smoke it while you are doing something else you will lose it and you will start getting some bitter and acid notes those spicy and bitter notes prove in my opintion that this tobacco would age wonderfully probably in 2 to 5 years with the fermentation of sugars the flavours would round up a bit becoming even sweeter so I will definitely get a few tins to age for a few years this tobacco initially seem very light bodied in reality it is definitely a medium body mixture the nicotine hit may surprise you do not underestimate it there is much more nicotine that what you may think and it is very fulfilling after a bowl you won’t feel the urge to smoke for a while and this is also one of the reasons why I wasn’t able to smoke the entire tin It is difficult to smoke it more than once per evening or twice per day so in conclusion I really liked this tobacco I think any Virginia lover will really enjoy it and definitely a tobacco worth aging in the cellar that’s it, nothing else to add I think you can easily find this tobacco in Switzerland so I am sure many fellow Italian pipesmokes had the chance to try it so please comment and leave your thoughts I am very curious to read about your experience I hope this video was not too long and that you enjoyed it today the weather was pretty bad so I couldn’t go out to conclude the review in Union Square as I originally planned I am going to finish this nice smoke, see you next time! ciao!
