Engineering students, entrepreneur team up to build a better pooper scooperOn November 4, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
In the state of North Carolina we
actually have a Department of Agriculture inspection every year. And
they come through to make sure that we’re doing everything right for the
pets. One year we actually got hit for having a little rust on our pooper
scoopers. I started looking for our alternatives to fix that problem because
the ones that we have are essentially just residential use ones. And in
industrial use we use it a lot more than the standard at home parent would. I love
the city of Nashville and I was here on some other business and while I was here
I actually did some research and found the Wond’ry with entrepreneurship and
then the Makerspace that they had here. I was intrigued to come and check it out.
We started with just meeting with the group and brainstorming throwing out
some ideas. Then we’d started prototyping. We’d usually do a sketch prototype or we
just threw some stuff together, test it real quick to see if it worked.
And then we would meet with our sponsor talk to him see what he
liked what he didn’t like. Tell him what worked for us and what didn’t. And then
we’d go back to the beginning. I was the manufacturing lead so I did a lot of the
cutting and rebuilding of the products as we went from prototype to physical design.
It doesn’t really matter what the project is. it’s you know part of the
experience of designing and innovating. And I think where students go in their
careers they’re gonna they’re gonna have projects that are gonna take them in
areas they have no expertise. And the whole idea of this class and this project
is that you don’t need to be an expert in any of these things. That the
exercises you rely on people who are the experts. And they bring their domain
expertise and if you trust the process of human centered design you’ll
have a higher probability of converging on something that works.
