Did all the PDs decide to make me challenge things? [Happy Together/2020.03.12]On March 13, 2020 by Raul Dinwiddie
(Video call) It has been a while. (Team Turtle) Oh, I have homework. (Repeat after the 2 pages of Magic Sentence.) Number one. She is putting on glasses. Number two. Photocopier. – Photocopier. / – Photocopier. (Papa Yoo does homework for the LC part…) Documents. (in-between works.) Item. (Papa Yoo is listening carefully.) – Schedule. / – Schedule. Schedule. (Papa Yoo is listening carefully.) Laboratory. (He tries to send a message to his teacher.) (How is he typing so slowly?) Are you typing with your toes? You are so slow. I rarely use a laptop. (He gives an excuse.) Do you use one finger? I use two fingers. Your toes? (Thank you. See you on Tuesday.) (Thank you. See you on Tuesday.) (He could send a message only after a long while.) My goodness. I am being punished. (Ashamed) What do you mean? I am being punished for not studying back in school. (A punishment for not studying back in school) That’s what I think. (A punishment for not studying back in school) I should have studied. – You know… / – It isn’t too late. (“Time is the only doctor that can fix bad habits.”) (By Gracian) (Week 1) (The Bottom Student’s First Study Time) – Jungmin. / – Let’s see how I did. Jungmin. (He has been studying alone for 3 days.) I am excited to see the video. (This is how the bottom student studies alone.) Jungmin and his gear. Gosh. (To study, you need the right gear.) (He brought important gear from the last class.) Having the right gear helps. I wanted us to have the same set of gear so that we can cheer up and study. I bought the pencil cases for teamwork. This thought occurred to me. Having good school supplies doesn’t mean you will study well. Is it that important? (Jungmin is the type to blame his gear.) (Jungmin likes stationeries.) Studying is all about having the right gear. (But he isn’t interested in studying.) In case I get drowsy, I brought coffee beans. Whenever it’s time to study, I want to clean up. I know. You want to clean the desk. You want to study at a clean desk. The vocabulary test. (He finally gets down to business.) (In the past 3 days, he memorized vocabulary.) The first one is “confidence”. Trust in oneself. (He gets “confidence” right.) “Excellent”. Outstanding. (He gets “Excellent” right.) “Highly”. Greatly. Very. “Position”. Location. (He is off to a good start. How will he score?) So that was the first vocabulary test. (Vocabulary test for the RC part) My score. (What’s his score?) Out of 19 words, I got two wrong. (He got 17 out of 19 words right.) He did a good job. (He got 17 out of 19 words right.) Good job. (His self-love explodes.) Good job. No one would know this feeling. People who gave up on studying early on like me should experience this feeling. Seriously. It felt incredible. Jungmin studied really hard. – I stuck to a routine. / – Right. (I memorized the words while on set yesterday.) (I tested myself, and I got 17 out of 19 right.) (Adding the S to verbs with plural subjects) (still confuses me though.) (Hold on. If it’s all right with you,) (can we video chat for five minutes?) – Are you free? / – Yes. Let me give you a few pointers then. – It’ll only take five minutes. / – Sure. Thank you. Whenever I texted Wonwu with a question about those I don’t know, he’d video chat with me even on the way to his work to answer them for me. He’d show me a sample question and help me understand how I should approach it in the most passionate way. He’d reach out to me first with questions. He called and texted and that attitude alone will up his score. It’s all about his will to do better. Because of all the help that I’m receiving, I knew I had to do my best. The score I get isn’t important. Since it’s a long-term project, I told myself that I had to be constant. Due to their encouragement, I pushed myself to work hard. (We root for your successful one month.) Gosh. So the first week is now over and we saw the progress of Team Turtle. I want to know how it was like since you haven’t studied in a while. As I said before, I’ve always wanted to take the time to study English. – Being constant is key though. / – But it’s not easy. It may be easy to talk about, but that wasn’t the case especially since we have day jobs. Jungmin, how was it for you? I had to fight against my own tendencies and I practically forced myself at first to sit down at a desk. That’s how I can begin, right? Anyway, it was fun at first. In terms of the reading section and the listening section… – They made it easier to understand. / – The teachers taught us the easy parts at first, so I figured it was easy. I took a quiz and got a lot of the questions right. It was just too easy and all I needed to know was the pattern. You didn’t even have to understand the English. Exactly! At this rate, I’d be able to get a high score in no time, so studying was a blast. I’d like to ask you guys about their first class. What did you think? Jaeseok likes to take the more traditional approach. Instead of memorizing the pattern of what he just learned, he stuck to studying actual English. – Head on. / – It’s like he wanted to understand whatever he was reading. – It’s why I was slower. / – Meanwhile, Jungmin would memorize the pattern and apply that to quickly find the correct answer. – He’s good at applying the rules. / – Exactly. He knows how to approach the questions. Now I’m really excited to see your score. – Right. / – Gosh. The pressure is squeezing the life out of me. As you know, the broadcasting networks won’t leave Jaeseok alone. They make him play the drums, sing trot songs, cook ramyeon, play the harp, and now study TOEIC. When I first heard about this, I thought that the producers of the broadcasting networks got together and decided on what to make me do. (Jaeseok brings the networks together.) They must’ve decided to transform me within the year. Yes, on a nationwide scale. They couldn’t let me be. So whatever they wanted… I honestly thought that our producer met with Producer Kim Taeho. I hear that Team Turtle took on different parts in week two. – Let’s see how you did. / – Sure. (Week 2, during the filming of Happy Together) Kanghoon, was it exhausting? – Not really. / – No? I’m good. (The MC’s enjoy a sweet break.) We were with Kanghoon in the waiting room. (What is TOEIC Kid doing here?) (Change the channel) (and kiss your free corn snack goodbye.) (Kim Kanghoon, TOEIC Kid, the youngest special MC) He’s the jerk! (The talented young actor) (made the viewers laugh and cry.) I heard that you’re working on your vocabulary. Yes, I’ve been memorizing words. Did you buy a vocabulary book? No, the teacher gave me some homework. The best way to memorize them is by playing a game. Right, sounds good. If someone says “apple,” the next person will name a word that starts with E. – I see. / – A word relay. – That’s right. / – With Kanghoon? A word relay. – Are you confident, Kanghoon? / – Yes. (He’s full of confidence.) Come on. Since this is Happy Together, let’s start with “together.” Happy Together? R. Relationship. – Relationship? / – Yes, relationship. (They’re all surprised by the fancy word.) Nice one. He shocked me. – And the meaning? / – P? (They must say the definition too.) – Pig. / – What does it mean? – The connection. / – Pig. Kanghoon said “pig” while looking at me. He only said what was correct. – Pig? / – Pig. (This was Saeho before he lost 8.7kg.) – Nice one. / – Your letter is G. – G? / – Hesitate and you’re out. Great. Something above normal. – Great? / – Great. – So T. / – Yes, T. Toy. Toy? And the meaning? It’s a doll. (Hyunmoo’s being annoying.) Did you think I’d say You Heeyeol? Unbelievable. You honestly didn’t have to ask me that. Still, I needed to check. Did I overreact a bit? – You were snappy just now. / – Right, I apologize. English is a touchy subject for me. You should’ve seen your face. Y? Yellow, then. Wonderful. Loud. – DJ. / – Jazz. – Jazz. / – Zoo. And the meaning? A park with a collection of wild animals. (Hyunmoo annoys Jaeseok again.) – But… / – Are you kidding me? – I need to be sure. / – Did you see him? (Upsetting) He was really touchy that day. I almost punched you. – Orange. / – Orange. Orange, O, R, A, N, G, E. E? Education. Receiving systematic instruction. Network. Network. And the meaning? – Seriously? / – And the meaning? (Jaeseok explodes for the 2nd time.) Don’t be so touchy. A system of interconnected things. Comedian. N. Go ahead. (Coughing) You’re coughing to buy time, right? – Right. / – Kanghoon… (Is TOEIC Kid putting on an act?) Are you coughing for real? I don’t think you are. It was too obvious. It didn’t seem real. N? Well, N… Yes, N. If you can’t name a word, you’re out of the game. NG. NG? – That was a cop-out. / – NG? It’s not like I can strictly apply the rules to you. I shouldn’t try that hard to beat a kid. (The 12-year-old boy is up against Jaeseok who’s 49.) What would I achieve by beating him anyway? Right? You’ll feel good about yourself. G? An era. Generation. It ends with an N. And the meaning? I said it was an era. – Give a detailed definition. / – That’s incorrect. – It doesn’t mean era. / – Right. – No? / – The people born and living at the same time. Oh, yes. That’s the one. Whatever. You’re out. (Saeho is out of the game.) – I beat the top of the class. / – That’s right. – You surely did. / – Right. Look at how thrilled Kanghoon is. – You’re out of the game. / – All right. So that’s what it means. Wonder. – And the meaning? / – Awe. – Nice. / – Wonder. – R. / – R. R? (A word starting with R) (Coughing) – Come on. / – Seriously? Again? Are you coughing again? – He’s adorable. / – I know how he is. (The show he puts on infuriates the others.) You weren’t eating or drinking anything. – Come on. / – Okay, I got one. (The Grand Award goes to Kim Kanghoon!) Rabbit. Rabbit? – T? / – Yes, T. Top. – Right. / – Top. – Top. / – Top? – P. / – Your letter is P. – I’ll give you 5 seconds. / – 5 seconds. – No more exceptions. / – 5, 4… – P.S. / – What was that? P.S. – What’s that? / – P.S? – At the end of a letter? / – P.S. P.S? You’re unbelievable, you know that? Have you no shame? (Jaeseok explodes for the 3rd time.) Fine, let’s say that you won. – Right. / – You won. – Kanghoon’s the winner. / – Right. P.S? It’s time to start filming, so let’s head inside. – Gosh. / – Goodness. Who do you think will do better in the test? – I… / – He’s studying constantly. I’m taking the slow-but-steady route. – And I… / – Meanwhile, Saeho… – He’ll cram for the exam. / – Right. Which method do you think will be more effective? – Slow but steady. / – Right? (Kanghoon thinks Team Turtle will win.) Let me prove you wrong then. Slow but steady could be better. – I know but… / – It’s better than cramming. There’s not a lot I can cover though. You won’t believe the burden that’s added every day.
