Confessions of a First-Level Leader: I Can’t get my Team to Take Ownership of the Goals We’ve SetOn September 14, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
I can’t seem to get my team to take ownership
for the goals we’ve set. Take the pressure off of you. Follow these three steps to help
your team take ownership and hold each other accountable to the goals they’ve set. First,
schedule a brief daily or weekly accountability session. 15-20 minutes max. Have each team
member share what they have done, what they’ll do, and what’s getting in the way of progress.
Your job is to remove any obstacles in their way. Second, help your team create a dashboard
to track the goals. Make sure that it is visible to everyone. Review and update it in every
session. Third, celebrate every time your team reaches a milestone or completes a goal
and thank them for their efforts. Increase ownership by regularly sharing with your team
why the work matters, and how it influences the organization for good.
