Competenz Trades: How to become a forestry worker – Jaz KuruOn November 15, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Kia Ora my name’s Jaz Kuru from Kuru
Contracting Limited in Gisborne. So when I left school I had no plans out there.
I wanted to be in the police force but then dad gave me the opportunity, so as soon as a turned 16 I headed out into the bush worked for my mom and dad in the family
business. Started from the bottom. so I was log making, running around after everyone,
getting the ropes of everything… Competenz have worked in our industry
and our crew for quite some time now put a lot of people into apprenticeships
and that’s how I joined up. I started out on landing operations, which is chainsaw, log making,
and then I went to level three log making. I think it took me about three years to complete my apprenticeship. I am now a qualified forestry worker. Doing an apprenticeship was pretty hard for me.
I like to do things practical instead of the theory. Competenz was really supporting, and it
that someone came out from Competenz on site to help us with the theory.
Being a qualified apprentice means the world to me. Making my family happy and proud,
and inspiring others. Working in the foresty industy would suit a person that is hard-working, loves the outdoors,
loves working in the crew as a team and doesn’t mind if they get their hands dirty.
It’s like a big family. When I get up in the morning,
whether its raining or sunny I love coming to work because I get to work good team I love learning new things everyday.
I really enjoy my job. Doing a health and safety course with Competenz was really good as health and safety has a big impact on forestry and learning a lot of health and safety and putting it in the workplace means a lot to every crew.
Here we just want you to be safe and go home in one piece I’m excited about my future.
I hope to run and own Kuru contracting one day. I’d love to keep inspiring young people in
the industry, including myself. I love working in the foresty industry. Everything starts with a dream.
