Binghamton Meets NOLA Pt. 2 – Students Make it HappenOn August 18, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
This program has become student led and student
run so it won’t happen unless the students come and say we want to go again. It’s a lot, but it’s nice to take the
reins and to be able to craft a trip in the way you think that it should be crafted and
to start building a team. I mean, we start this process essentially when we get right
back to school. The students begin organizing very early on.
This year it was in the summer. They are involved in fundraising, team building, training, they
learn how to write letters, they work with media, they learn every part of community
organizing, as well as when they are down there they are facilitating, debriefing. Times
both morning and night where they are talking about they’re experiences and applying it
to course work and really thinking about how to be better practitioners. Anytime that you have the opportunity to think
about social change that must mean you have the privilege of that thought to that effect
change. So it is important for you to take that opportunity to take these fantastic things. It’s learning how to be a good advocate
and building skills that will allow you to be successful and to make change in the areas
that are important for you to make change in.
