Alabama Community Colleges offering Mercedes specific trainingOn October 15, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Since the Mercedes Tech Program has started we have hired 107 students full-time, 25 students are now team leaders in the shop, and I have 6 students who are working as technicians in the repair area. The Mercedes Tech technician program is a two-year associate degree program where we teach Mercedes vehicle technology. At Shelton it’s a school and work every week program, at our other community colleges which are Wallace State in Hanceville and now Bevill State in Sumiton and Hamilton that is a Mercedes Tech co-op program If 30 students start the program and they all finish at 3.0 and above GPA all those would be hired full-time I get to look at the very top of that list whether that’s two students or three students or four they would be selected to go into the 16 week apprenticeship program for repair. When you think about vehicle technology today it is much different than vehicle technology 20 years ago. We build what I call a computer with four wheels on it. Vehicles we build are very technical and complicated when you go to troubleshoot. But we try to incorporate as much Mercedes vehicle technology into the training. With all of our community college partners, they all have the Mercedes SUVs. They’re seeing it, they’re knowing it, they’re doing it, They’re around the vehicles all the time so it’s not a shock to them when they hit the floor. When you have a car that has over 100 control units in the vehicle to tell it how to function, that’s 100 mini computers that tell this car what to do you have to understand that and you have to want to learn that From the schematics of the vehicle From using your multimeter and knowing how to use your multimeter The end result can be a career of a lifetime. This is Mercedes-Benz.
