A Winning Pre-Game TalkOn September 1, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
It’s really important as a basketball team that you guys understand that on any given night you can beat anyone but equally important that you understand that on any given night anyone can beat you if you guys think that just because you beat them earlier in the season when you played them that you’re automatically going to win tonight then you’re a fool. I promise you you’re a fool. And there’s nothing that I can tell you or coach can tell you that guarantee that you’ll win tonight but I can tell you there’s two things you can do to greatly increase your chances and that’s with your effort and his execution. From an effort standpoint if you are in the game you have to out play them every single possession you run the floor in both directions as fast as possible. Box out every single time a shot is taken. and there’s no such thing as a 50-50 ball. At worst it’s a 90-10 ball in your favor. If you’re not in the game you cheer your ass off you stand up and clap for your teammates when they come out of the game You be in the game even if you’re not in the game. You give the best effort possible on every possession for the full 32 minutes. From an execution standpoint you have to take care of the ball which means you make the right play, not the cool play. On top of that you make sure that every offensive possession you get the best shot possible. Which means you have to give up a good shot to get him a great shot. Which means you only shoot if you’re rhythm and in your range Collectively you make sure that you guys get the best shot every single possession. And then conversely force them to take the worst shot possible. You put a hand in their face every single time they shoot. You communicate and you rotate on defense If you give a great effort and if you execute you have a much much higher chance of being successful and being really happy 90 minutes from now. Don’t ever take anything for granted don’t ever disrespect your opponent because it’s not who you play it’s how you play. Because anything less means you didn’t do the best job that you’re capable of and that’s completely unacceptable.
