A Migrant Worker’s Micro-Influencer LifeOn September 18, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
[Upbeat music playing] Hi, I’m Nazrul. I’m from Bangladesh. I’ve been working in Singapore for 11 years. I’m creating Facebook videos. I work as a safety coordinator and I’m a student at PSB Academy. I go to the gym I run for marathons and I want to be a motivational speaker. I came to Singapore in 2008. Before I was a safety coordinator I was just a general construction worker. [Cheerful music playing] A friend of mine asked me “Nazrul, do you want to be a Lifting Supervisor?” “They get more pay.” Then I said, “Oh, that’s interesting.” So, after six months my friend and I went to apply for the Lifting Supervisor course. When I started learning it motivated me to learn more. Until now, for 10 years I haven’t stopped taking short courses or any formal education. Sorry, one second, is that ok? My wife called me. Alright, call me again once you reach home. Okay. Peace be with you. My wife just got discharged from the hospital. She just gave birth recently. Okay, so where were we? [Upbeat music playing] Usually, I start work at 7.20 a.m. with a toolbox meeting. I brief my fellow workers about the activities on that particular day. I leave work at around 6.30 p.m. After my work, I go to university. Today, I have Hygiene and Toxicology class. My class ends around 10 p.m. Usually, after I get my salary every month I will save some percentage of the money for my career development. Recently, I started a Facebook page. I try to share with them the opportunities that Singapore has. There are no people who motivate them and ask them to learn better skills or develop their career because everyone thinks that they are just migrant workers. What can they do? I can’t reach all the migrant workers in Singapore or around the world. If I do videos it will be a better way to spread the opportunity to everyone. The responses I get motivates me to do good for others not to stop and encourage others on the possible ways they can take. If I can share my knowledge and I can go for my self-development they can do even better. That is why I share my knowledge with them. That’s three minutes! I’m just kidding.
