8 Skills and capabilitiesOn August 17, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Hi, I’m Andrew I’m the owner of AWD Development Solutions and the creator of the Exceptional Team Blueprint. And in this video I’m going to consider the area of Skills and capabilities from the Blueprint. By having a detailed understanding of the skills and capabilities of all the team members, you’ll make sure that the team has got the range of skills it needs to deliver its purpose, and meet its challenges and deliverables. And having a clear understanding at an individual team member level allows the team to play to each of those team member’s strengths and take advantage of them. Building on those strengths can increase the overall team performance far more effectively than trying to develop individual team member’s weaknesses. The type of skills and capabilities that you could consider will be technical skills, functional skills, team member’s qualifications, their behavioural skills, their experiences and their leadership skills. And when you’ve developed that detailed understanding of the range of skills across the team you can then use that information to identify the gaps. You can fill these gaps either by recruiting new team members who’ve got those skills and bring them with them, or by developing existing team members so that those gaps are filled. Depending on the nature of the team it might be that the skills needed change over time. So you need to regularly review the skills and the capabilities that you need across a team, and the skills and capabilities that your team members have. So start to work with your team members to really understand what their skills and their capabilities are.
