0% Teamwork & Synchronization! Swans crushed by “swan’s feet” [The Swan Club /2017.12.20]On November 14, 2019 by Raul Dinwiddie
Today, we’ll be learning another character. Since you’re members of The Swan Club, it’s only fitting that you play a swan. (No way) That’s a difficult piece. (“Swan Lake” is one of Tchaikovsky’s top 3 ballets) (and is the most beloved classical number.) (The mystical ballet tells the story of Odette,) (the young girl under a spell who turns into a swan.) The scene you’ll dance to is “Dance of the cygnets”. The key point of this scene is cooperation. The four of you must be in sync. – In unison. / – That’s right. Cheng Xiao will be good at that. The audience loves this scene the most, even more so than when the protagonists dance. (“Dance of the cygnets”) (Four little swans dance in unison.) Oh my. (How can we pull this off?) (No way) – The best dancer should be at the front. / – Right. Let’s follow her lead. I’m sure she’ll lead us. Your right hand must always be on top. – Like this. / – Please make sure of that. Your right hand is always on top. I’ll take your hand. These are a lot of hands. – Is this, right? / – Yes. That’s right. This is the formation. (The basic arm position) You’re now ready. Point the foot in the back. (1. Point the back foot.) Point. All right. Here we go. Like this. And go. (They follow the basics well.) Are we good? The key is cooperation. You must be in complete unison. (It’s all about being in unison.) And… (How well will they work together?) One, two, three, four. (What a mess!) One, two, three four. (Zero points for cooperation.) (They don’t know how to work together.) I’m sorry. Jiwon, I’m so sorry. – It’s okay. / – I’m so sorry. (It’s not as easy as it seems.) I’m mentally shattered. What on earth were we doing? Why are four swans flapping their legs? I know why. – We’re swimming in the lake. / – Exactly. – That’s what it is. / – When swans swim, they seem elegant above the surface. However, their legs are constantly moving. That’s the meaning of the dance. It’s why your feet are constantly moving too. (The legs move more than in other ballet steps.) This too. (She’s amazing.) Like this. Young swans. Yes, they’re young swans. I guess we’re too old then. – Cheng Xiao can do it. / – No, I can’t. In our hearts, we’re always in our 20s. – We can do it. / – Yes, you can. All right, now look. Back foot, front foot, back, front. Back, front, back, front. Back foot and front foot. (Moving sideways) Jete. Back, and then to the side. Like that. (Jete, A jump where the dancer extends one leg) (then jumps off the floor with the other) (The mentors demonstrate once again.) (In perfect harmony) (Dancing in unison) All right. Now let’s try that to the music. (It’s so fast.) We can do it. (They’re deeply worried.) Gosh. Back foot, front foot, back, and front. Sungeun, it’s the other way around. – It’s back and front. / – Really? Get ready and go. – Back foot, front foot. / – Back, and front. Let’s try that again. Back foot, front foot, back, and front. (Sungeun keeps getting it wrong.) I’ve never danced those kinds of steps before, so I was clueless. I was the only one who couldn’t do it, so I had a little meltdown. Just hold hands normally first. – Like this? / – Yes. Let’s try it to the music. (Will they manage to do it?) Back, front, back, front. (At first, there’s no trouble.) – Back, front… / – Hold on. I lost my step. (Floundering) (Jiwon can’t contain her laughter.) Gosh, that hurts. Back and front. You’re doing great. (Yoonah missed her step.) That was quite good. (Unfortunately, they failed.) (Hang in there.) My legs are starting to give in. I want to do better. – My body just won’t allow it. / – It’s all right. Like I said, it’s all about cooperating. – Slowly. / – Yes, do it slowly. Let’s try that again. Back, front, back, front, hold on. Do it again. And back, front, back, from the top. We can’t seem to do it. (They’re off to a good start this time.) Back, front, back, front. – We’re doing it. / – Gosh! Back, front, back. Okay. (They’re nearly at the finish line.) (Will our swans be able to reenact this?) – We’re doing it. / – Gosh! (They missed a beat just as expected.) Okay. Okay, good. (The Swan Club sinks.) (It really is tough.) That’s all you’ll be learning today. I hope that you’ll come back improved the next time we meet. This is how you should go home today. (I’m burned out.) Gosh. – That was hard. / – You should see how you all look now. When we first started, your eyes were twinkling. You all look exhausted now though. My body won’t move the way I want it to, and I couldn’t be more mortified. I want to do better. I know I can do better, but it just won’t happen. I need to practice my butt off every day. That’s all I can think of right now.
